What’s up, doc?
Our next Meet the Team post is here. Have you ever wondered what a tech artist does inside the game?
Keep on reading then!
Meet Lead Tech Artist, Cauã
Hey there guys, hello! My name is Cauã and I am the Lead Tech Artist in Looney Tunes World of Mayhem. Since I’m one of the oldest members of the team (I’ve worked on this game for around 4 years), I’ve had the pleasure of contributing to different areas of its production cycle.
In its early stages, I started in UI/UX design. I worked on a crazy number of icons and on different automated asset export pipelines – seriously, have you noticed how many icons this game has? I also did a bit of concept art and helped with some final art renders, UI implementation, and VFX.
It was only until recently that I got to be the lead in a team of amazingly talented technical artists.
So what do you do as a Lead Tech Artist?
Right now I’m more involved in supervising VFX production for character skills. As I said, I work with a bunch of crazy talented people who are passionate about exploring and expanding the limits of what we can technically do to fill the gap between the artistic vision of our team and the technical limitations we face when developing new content.
That way, we can achieve the best visuals we can run in a mobile device while being true to the art direction of our game and the original cartoon. Each team member has their own set of skills and works passionately on different fronts of development.
What’s that you love about World of Mayhem and the franchise?
Being able to make a game based on a franchise I loved since I was a kid has mind-blowing consequences to art production. It’s not rare to receive flashbacks of funny moments and episodes we saw more than a decade ago. So we tend to use those as visual solutions for some skills we are working on.
Of course, it’s a great responsibility to translate the essence of such classic toons to actions with just a few seconds. I’m also constantly thrilled by the challenge of expanding the Looney Tunes universe. Sometimes this means coming up with toon variations never seen before but that could belong to one of the classic episodes (which we do in collaboration with WB).
What are you currently working on?
Right now I’m polishing the visual effects of characters we’ll be releasing in the upcoming months. Not sure what can I share about this, but I think youll find them legendary!
If you were a toon, who would you be?
I’d probably be Marvin. He has access to all kinds of cool whacky tech, and for all the technobabble he speaks I bet he could totally build his own video games! He also has one of the best quotes in the history of cartoony villains: “Where’s the kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom!”
Which are your favorite World of Mayhem toons?
Tough question! I’ll always have a bond with the ones I had more fun working on – and the list is always expanding. So far I think I stick with Devil Dog, Bat-Suit Wile, O’Pat and Samurai Sheepdog.
And what about your favorite team composition of Mayhem?
For now, I use Pepe Le bard (just because), Devil Dog (have you seen all those flames?), and the new Ninja Ralph and Samurai Sheepdog.
Any cool development moments you want to share?
I really enjoy adding small details to new skills that will only be perceived by the ones who are keen enough to catch those details. For example, have you noticed that Wildcard Wolf card suits are always random? Except for his “Winning Hand Skill” – then he picks one card of each suit to throw at his opponent.
So we’re about to finish this – anything else you wanna add?
I’d really like to thank all of the people I got the privilege to work with in the last years in order to bring World of Mayhem to live. Also, all players who are really supportive of our work and get as excited with this universe as we are.
Also: keep sharing your fan art! I love seeing those in my spare time – seriously you are amazing!
